Tiny yet mighty, these neutral-tasting seeds have been prized by the Aztecs for their medicinal value for hundreds of years. They are low in calories and an excellent source of fibre, essential minerals, heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. In fact, chia seeds are a source of complete protein, plus they act as an anti-inflammatory and they provide long-lasting energy too. When soaked, they absorb up to 12 times their weight in water and develop a distinctive gel-like texture, ideal for chia-based beverages or puddings, and pectin-free jams. Chia seeds can also be used as an egg replacement in baking, as a topping for salads and breakfast bowls or added to smoothies to contribute to a healthier digestive system.
WHAT IS A COMPLETE PROTEIN?
A complete protein or whole protein is a food source of protein that contains an adequate proportion of each of the nine essential amino acids necessary in the human diet.
WHAT ARE OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS?
Omega-3 fatty acids generally come from one of two sources. Firstly, they can be derived from fish oils, which contain docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). Secondly, they can be derived from some plants, which contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which is converted into DHA and EPA in the body. Chia seeds contain ALA.
